August 2023 Plant-Based Recipes and Updates from Melissa
Recipe box reflections, trending recipes, recommended book of the month, dessert poll, and more!
Did you grow up with a recipe box like this? I recently received our box and had a blast going through it. My family’s favorites from the 80s included lots of versions of pasta salad, and recipes for artichokes, horseradish, and seafood (not all together, thank goodness!).
The recipes clipped from the Philadelphia Inquirer and inspired by restaurant visits had an aspiration vibe, plus there were some from package labels and even a few coupons for $0.10-0.13 - before they included bar codes! From those I have gone through so far, I have been broiling more foods.

The Plant-Powered Plan to Beat Diabetes: A Guide for Prevention and Management by Sharon Palmer, MSFS, RDN
This book explains how a healthy plant-based dietary pattern and lifestyle can work together to both decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes and help to control it. The foreword by Dr. Robert Graham is a great introduction to the research, and tips and recipes can make healthy vegan cooking accessible even to beginners. I tried the plum panzanella salad (yum!) and recommend the purple power smoothie, mango black bean salsa, old-fashioned minestrone, and vegetable paella.
